Chapter Five
After it happened, they hadnât mentioned the kiss. Which was as well, because it was odd; it was an odd demonstration of God knows what. Mia couldnât think. What she did know was that after the initial surprise, Sandra had placed her hand back on Miaâs hip, her thumb stroking along the very edge of that bony protrusion and the lower part of her belly, heat radiating from the firmness of her touch. It had made Miaâs breath hitch, her mind woozy with sudden vertigo. She had swayed on her feet, and Sandra had caught her, steadied her, as unyielding as the cool metal that held up the footplate of her chair and pressed against Miaâs shins.
Then, just as firmly, Sandra had pushed her away, with a wink and a âLater.â
And that had been that.
They had continued on to the Indian restaurant on the corner of the pedestrian street, where the owners had put in a miniature ramp of corrugated steel over the threshold, and where the waiting staff seemed all to be on a first-name basis with Sandra.
âYou come here often?â Mia had asked, realising too late it sounded like a parody of a pick-up line.
âLinda and I used to come here all the time before the band took off.â Sandra flipped open her menu. âTheir palak paneer is unbeatable.â
Linda Ling. Mia was nonplussed. Linda Ling was all thatâbut somehow, Mia seemed to have forgotten what that was. Forget about Linda. Since when had Mia the Dykemaker Andersson started to follow instructions to a T?
âYouâre not identical.â
The corner of Sandraâs mouth twitched, and damn, if it wasnât the sexiest thingâ¦
âWeâre more alike than youâd think, if you subtract the hair dye and the contacts, and add in a few extra kilos and some wheels. Sheâs pretty hot on wheels, actually. Used to steal my ride all the time when we were kids.â
âOh, so you were only a child whenâ¦â Mia had bit her tongue, quite literally. She took a swig of the water the waiter had brought over, wishing it had been something stronger.
Sandra looked at her blankly. âWhen?â
Mia squirmed in her seat, but there was nothing for it. âWhen you had your accident. Sorry, Iââ
To her consternation, Sandra guffawed. âNo, no, Iâm no accident. I was born this way. I forget sometimes that peopleâIâve got spina bifida myelomeningocele, or, in laymanâs terms: these legs were not made for walking. Iâm completely paralysed from the waist down, always have been. And now that weâve got that out of the way, tell me: do you really enjoy the Raven Choirâs particular brand of music?â
Mia had had to pick her dropped jaw up off the floor. It wasnât graceful. âWellâ¦â she had hedged, but she was already shaking her head, almost involuntarily.
âThatâs what I thought.â Sandra had winked at her for the second time that night. âYou ready to order, or do you want me to do the honours?â
âPlease.â Mia changed her telltale shake of the head into a nod.
